•Onuachu injured in Southampton’s defeat

…Babajide scores in Tenerife loss

It was a bad day in the office for Nigerian stars abroad as most of them ended up on the losing side while the goals didn’t flow as well. ABIODUN ADEWALE recaps their performances

SUNDAY
ENGLAND

ONUACHU, ARIBO (SOUTHAMPTON)

Lanky striker Paul Onuachu made his sixth Premier League appearance for Southampton this season against Liverpool and he put in a good shift for 52 minutes before he was taken off due to a knock. His compatriot, Joe Aribo also came in as a substitute in the first half for an injured Adam Lallana for his 11th EPL appearance this season. Onuachu is yet to score this season while Aribo has one EPL goal.
FRANCE

GABRIEL OSHO (AUXERRE)

After making his Super Eagles debut and getting two caps during the last international window, Osho returned to his new club in France and made his 10th league appearance with a clean sheet in their 1-0 win against Angers.

MOSES SIMON (NANTES)

There was no goal for Moses Simon as Nantes suffered another disappointing defeat at home against le Havre in the French topflight. The winger who has three goals and four assists couldn’t help them prevent another home defeat this season, as he was also booked in the 62nd minute for tripping during the 2-0 defeat.

SPAIN

RINSOLA BABAJIDE (TENERIFE)
Falcons striker Babajide scored a three-minute goal for Tenerife but that was a rude awakening for their hosts Barcelona who responded with five goals to win the game 5-1. Babajide meanwhile has three goals and one assist this season.

THE NETHERLANDS

CHUBA AKPOM (AJAX)

Chuba Akpom started from the bench again and wasn’t on target as Ajax beat Zwolle 2-0. He has two goals and one assist in 10 games as he continues to find his feet in his second season in the Netherlands despite starting well last term.

CZECH REPUBLIC

IGOH OGBU (SPARTA PRAGUE)

Defender Ogbu put in a strong shift at the back helping Slavia Prague keep a clean sheet in their 4-0 thrashing of Budejovice to maintain their eight-point gap at the top of the table. Ogbu has played 10 league games for Prague this season.
SAUDI ARABIA

WILLIAM TROOST-EKONG (AL KHOLOOD)

Like his latest outing with Nigeria, it wasn’t a good day in office for Nigeria defender Troost-Ekong on Sunday as his Al Kholood side fell to a 2-1 defeat to 10-man Damac in the Saudi topflight.

SATURDAY

ENGLAND

IWOBI, BASSEY (FULHAM)

In the Premier League, Calvin Bassey had a day to forget in defence while Alex Iwobi scored a sensational goal as Fulham fell to a 4-1 defeat at home to Wolves. Iwobi netted the opener in the 20th minute after he collected the ball on the edge of the box and curled a sublime effort into the far corner – netting his third goal of the season, sixth in 11 meetings against Wolves and 25th EPL goal. The visitors however responded before halftime through Matheus Cuhna and they scored three more goals in the second half to grab the win.

In the Regionalliga, Benin City-born Obiogumu registered the first hat-trick of his career as his Nürnberg II played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Viktoria Aschaffenburg.

FRANCE

JENNIFER ECHEGINI (PSG)

Super Falcons star Echegini finally opened her Première Ligue account with a stunning display in PSG’s 6-1 win over Dijon on Saturday. Echegini got PSG’s first goal in the 10th minute and grabbed her brace in the 36th minute in the rout. She had joined PSG from Juventus after an exciting time in Italy where she won the Italian division’s best young player award after netting ten goals in only 14 appearances.

BELGIUM
RAPHAEL ONYEDIKA (CLUB BRUGGE)

In the First Division A, Raphael Onyedika struck a venomous shot from distance for his first goal of the season during Club Brugge’s dominant 7-0 victory against Sint-Truiden.

TOLU AROKODARE (GENK)

Tolu Arokodare, with his ninth league goal, and Noah Adedeji-Sternberg were on the scoresheet for Genk as they forced a 3-0 defeat down the throat of Sporting Charleroi.

TURKEY

VICTOR OSIMHEN (GALATASARAY)

Osimhen was in action from start to finish for Galatasaray as the defending champions worked hard to carve out a tough 1-0 win at Bodrum FK. The Nigerian striker could have had an assist registered but Hakim Ziyech blasted a glorious chance over the bar after Osimhen set him through on goal.
AKINTOLA, OLAWOYIN (RIZESPOR)

David Akintola delivered a man-of-the-match display as he assisted both of Rizespor’s goals in their 2-1 Super Lig victory over Eyüpspor in Istanbul. Midfielder Ibrahim Olawoyin was also heavily involved in the win.

DAVID OKEREKE (GAZIANTEP)

At the Kalyon Stadyumu, David Okereke came off the bench to round up the scoring for Gaziantep FK in a convincing 3-0 win against Istanbul Basaksehir.

UKRAINE

SAMSON IYEDE (VORSKLA)

Little-known Iyede was the hero for Vorskla as the 26-year-old attacker assisted the first and netted the second in a 2-0 Premier League win against Cherkasy.
